M. Tim Welch grew up in a small rural area south of Salt Lake City. His father was an educator and his mother a homemaker and part time piano teacher. He and his wife Michele have been married for 39 years and have 5 children and 11 grandchildren. He and his wife have been actively involved in the LDS Church where he has served as a bishop and a stake president. He is also an avid golfer and enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren.
